Save Time Surfing the Internet

The following tips can help you save time surfing the internet...

  • Search engine toolbars - some search engines have a toolbar that you can download free. After downloading and installing them, they are added to your browser's toolbar. The download and the simple installation take only a few seconds with broadband. By the way, it goes without saying that upgrading from dial-up will save you loads of time while surfing. Google's toolbar can be dowloaded here. The page is for the Internet Explorer version. They also have a version for FireFox here. If you prefer a different search engine, try searching for the search engine's name with the word "toolbar".
  • Save time surfing the internet by every so often, clearing your browser's cache. Your browser saves web pages you have viewed, including images, for faster loading if you revisit the page. By periodically clearing/deleting the cached files, pages load faster because your browser spends less time looking for the page you currently are trying to view in its cache. To delete these files in Internet Explorer, Go to the Tools menu and click on the last option, "Internet Options" and in the middle section, "Temporary Internet Files" click on "Delete Files" and then on "OK."
  • Use your Favorites list to save time surfing the internet. When visiting a page that you may want to revisit, add it to the list by clicking the Favorites menu > Add to Favorites. If the name that is supplied with the page doesn't fit for you, type in a better name. Before you click OK, you can click on the New Folder button to add a new folder in which to store this new favorite web page's address. The new folder will appear under any folder you choose before you click the New Folder button. The folder hierarchy you create becomes the respective submenus of the Favorites menu.
  • Set you Home page to the page you visit most often by browsing to the webpage, then go to the Tools menu > Internet Options, and at the top press Use Current. If for some reason your favorite page doesn't load fast and you don't actually want to go to it everytime you open your browser, you can press the Use Blank button instead. When you open a browser window it will load a blank page quickly without going out to the internet at all. And from there you can choose any favorite. Another option is to set Google as your home page after you have an account with them and personalize the home page. Among the scores of things you can add to it is a Bookmarks section where you can add a handful of your favorite favorites to it. Google's home page loads fast and you will have your favorites a click away.
  • Another way to save time surfing the internet is to use shortcut combination keys.
    • CTRL (Control) + (together with) N to open a new Browser window
    • CTRL + Enter after you enter a site's address (URL) without the www and .com (your country's suffix). For example, if you type "cnn" in the address bar and press CTRL + Enter, www.cnn.com will load.
    • Holding down the Shift key when you click on a link will open the link in a new browser window.
    • CTRL + F brings up a small search window where you can type in a word you are looking for on the page.
    • CTRL + I opens and closes your favorites menu as an added (side window) pane.
