Save Time Booting Your Computer Up

You can save time booting up your computer by sending it to hibernation mode when you shut it down...

It works like this...

A computer has two kinds of memory...

The first is called RAM or Random Access Memory. It only works when your computer is powered up. This memory holds, among other things, you operating system and any open programs. When you boot up your computer, your computer checks your basic hardware and then lets the operating system load itself. After the operating system loads, it starts up programs that you have installed that need to be running from the get go, like antivirus software, and then any other programs you may have configured to load at startup time. This process repeats itself each time you turn on your computer.

When you turn your computer off, the operating system puts things neatly away and then turns off the power. Poof, all your RAM is empty. This is called volitile memory.

The other kind of memory is your hard disk(s). This memory, of course, remains intact when your computer is turned off.

The idea behind hibernation, and thus the name, is the operating system copies all of the RAM as it is to your hard disk and then turns your computer off...

Now, when you turn it back on, instead of the operating loading itself, checking certain things, and then loading your startup programs, it just copies the RAM it has stored on your hard disk back into RAM and you save time booting up.

To be able to put your computer into hibernation when you shut it down you must do two things...

One, Go to your Control Panel, Start > Control Panel, then double click on Power Options. Click on the Advanced tab and tick the Enable hibernation checkbox, and then press OK.

Hibernation option in the Control Panel.

Two, when you choose Start > Shut Down to turn off you computer there will be an option called hibernate along with the usual options of Shut Down, Restart, etc. If you don't see the Hibernate option in the list, hold down the Shift key when you click Shut Down.

Now your ready to save time booting up your computer. It is good practice to save your work before going into hibernation.

Also, it is a good idea to do a regular/full boot or restart from time to time.
